Enhancements to entrance at Milgate House near Maidstone, Kent

Peter joined TAG as an employee of Adam Architecture, working on new and alterations to country houses and housing schemes. He had previously worked for many years at Donald Insall Associates.

Illustrated is a project where Barry and Susan Jones wished to enhance the late Victorian entrance lodge constructed when the road was realigned away from Milgate House with its Queen Anne garden front and Tudor core. They bought late 19th century gates and railings to compliment the Victorian lodge; and commissioned Adam Architecture to design the gate posts, walls and plaques. These were designed in the revivalist Jacobethan style which popular during the late 19th century. The main body of this work was built of Kentish rag to match the lodge, but the moulded work was made in terracotta, like the lodge’s chimney pots. Terracotta was a material frequently used in the late 19th century rather than dressed stone.
