New Course: MSt in Architecture at Cambridge University
We are delighted to announce to you that The University of Cambridge have joined forces with the King’s Foundation to offer a unique new specialist pathway, within the MSt in Architecture programme at Cambridge, for students interested in traditional architecture and urban design. It is a three-year, part-time postgraduate programme that provides a rigorous and immersive route into the profession while accommodating the needs of those already working in practice.
On successful completion of the course students will have met the new Academic Outcomes set by the Architects Registration Board (ARB). In addition, students who have worked in practice during the same period, would be eligible to take the separate Practice Outcomes assessment to register as architects in the UK.
Course overview :
A Distinctive Programme that integrates Practice and Study
This innovative programme seeks to restore the link, between academic study and practice that is essential to a traditional education in architecture. The way it is structured allows students to continue their professional work while studying. Students undertake nine modules in Cambridge delivered through three two-week residential sessions each year. This offers students individual supervision along the established Cambridge model with world-class teaching from leading experts and practitioners in traditional and sustainable architecture. The programme is designed to draw together this academic and theoretical knowledge with the skills learnt in practice by allowing students to maintain their ongoing professional commitments for the duration of the course.
Programme content
During the course students explore the relationship between buildings and places. They will study how buildings relate to their context and the natural world around them. They will build up an understanding of how language in architecture evolves and develops from the materials and building techniques that are specific to the local geology, climate and culture of the area. They will learn what it takes to build in a durable manner so that buildings last and grow old gracefully. They will discover how to build in towns and cities to create places that are walkable, practical and beautiful for people to enjoy.
Who is the course designed for?
This course is for anyone with a first degree in architecture or a related field who has an interest in traditional architecture and urban design. It supports the progression of students currently working in a practice who want to learn and gain qualification following a route that combines academic study with continued practice in the field.
