Traditional Architecture and Urban Design Summer Schools 2025

Most architectural schools do not consider Traditional Architecture an acceptable subject. Avant-garde and Modernist ideas that arose in the wake of World War I became consolidated by World War II, replacing previous teaching and cultural traditions. Traditional principles of design were discarded, leading to a loss of knowledge about how traditional buildings and cities were created and why they successfully embodied human values and patterns of life. The new ideas, combined with industrial processes, also led to a decline in craftsmanship and a shift away from natural materials, resulting in significant costs for the built environment due to a lack of sustainability.

The near impossibility of studying tradition with a view to practical application within accredited architectural education has motivated many to address the issue. Several Summer Schools in Traditional Architecture and Urban Design have emerged across Europe and worldwide, aiming to create a viable alternative to the mainstream contemporary educational offerings.

Join us for an Open Table discussion, offered by INTBAU and TAG on these Traditional Architecture Summer Schools, exploring their aims, achievements, and the challenges they face in growing, gaining recognition, and potentially becoming an alternative pathway for architectural education.

Meet the founders of these movements, get a taste of what Summer Schools offer, and discover if embarking on this educational adventure is right for you!

Don't miss this unique opportunity: FREE tickets for students, available exclusively for this Open Table discussion!

We will showcase schools that were active in 2024 and are preparing for their 2025 editions, as well as introduce new programs starting in 2025, in total around 17 Summer Schools around the world. Fasten your seatbelts!
